Scanning 35mm Slides - Tips For Success

One of the best tips for scanning 35mm slides is to spend time and money to get a good scanner. The MRI scans will only be as good as the weakest link in the scanning process, and therefore a good scanner is one of the best tips for scanning 35mm slides.

As with all purchases, you weigh the features you get against the price you have to pay. In today's market you can get a lot of features for relatively little money. You should get in a position toeverything you need to do a great job of scanning 35mm slides for under $ 200.

I use the HP 4050 and I am quite satisfied with the quality and the numerous professional features that it offers. The HP 4050 offers you the highest color accuracy and high-definition scans with 4800 x 9600 dpi (dpi stands for dots per inch). The larger detects the number of dots per inch of information, a scanner, the greater is the resolution. Or, to put it in plain English, thethe picture is clearer. Inadequate dpi can cause blocky images. Photo scanner 4800 suitable x 9600 resolution produces spectacular images that are way beyond what you will regularly document scanners.

Preview speed is important, and the preview 4050 as soon as 8.5 seconds. You can scan up to 16 slides or 30 negatives at a time, and the software automatically separates the sheets from the scanner into separate files. Some of the features of the HP 4050Feedback:

1. Excellent color accuracy and photo reproduction with 6-color, 96-bit scan

2. Beautiful photo reprints with 4800 x 9600 dpi resolution

3. Remove dust and scratches from photos, slides and negatives on a button

4. Preservation of documents with digital archival-quality output

5. Edit text from scanned documents like magazine articles and letters

6. Scan up to 16 slides or 30 negatives simultaneously fitted with the adapter, then save asseparate files

7. Bring old and damaged photos back to life by restoring faded color with the included software

8. Automatically remove red eye and enhance details in dark photos

These are all properties that will significantly improve the professional quality of the effort and the quality of the scan 35mm slides. If you are using a quality scanner, the entire process of scanning 35mm slides easier and your final results are better. There are many beautiful photo scanners out there andthe one you choose depends entirely on your needs and your budget. The HP 4050 in any case my budget and my needs met, but I urge you to do your own research before you and your money should go on a photo scanner. The scanner you choose, the number one on the list for tips for scanning 35mm slides.

Firewire Scanner and Other Scanner Connections

Scanners are devices that an image (or text-scan) and then optically converted into a digital image. Current scanners typically one of Contact Image Sensor (CIS) or a charge-coupled device (CCD), whereas the older style drum scanner function uses a photomultiplier to the images meaning. Rotary scanners are a different kind of drum scanner with the difference that it uses a CCD instead of a photomultiplier.

By scanning the image is only a small part of theentire process and for any use at all, it has found its way onto the computer and then the application that use it effectively. In other words, the process of transferring the image from the scanner until a later software application required what was scanned. This depends on a few things. The first is how the scanner is actually connected, "said the computer, and secondly, how the corresponding software application receives theInformation from the connected scanner.

Scanner, actually large amounts of data during the scanning process. When you consider that an average size of A4 paper, scanned at 600 dpi, which an uncompressed 24-bit image is about a hundred megabytes of data transfer must be saved and then that. Modern scanners have no problem in generating this data set, often in just seconds. You are again determined only by the physical interface thatit connects to a computer. Below we list the connection for you.

Parallel connections are the slowest type of transfer method and they use the parallel port of the computer. Their only conceivable advantage of a parallel circuit is a financial one.

The General Purpose Interface Bus (GPIB) is another type of connection and was adopted by only a very small number of manufacturers. It was usually a DOS / Windows environment.

The Small Computer System Interface (SCSI)is usually supported only through a SCSI interface card, and although some scanner with this method, coupled with their own special card, any SCSI controller was delivered, is a viable option. SCSI connections can at the highest data transfer speeds that can support on the device and the controller. SCSI connections have largely been replaced by FireWire and USB.

Universal Serial Bus (USB) attached scanners are easy to use and can transfer very quickly. They arecheaper than the SCSI devices connected. Theoretically, a USB 2.0 data transfer devices with sixty megabytes per second.

Finally there is the scanner Firewire connection, which is connected to the USB 2.0 connections comparable. Firewire speeds vary from 25 to 800 Mb / s, but a particular device may not support the ability, all of these speeds.

Customer Review: Anoying noise
OK, I've had this machine for over a year now and I'm just about to smash it. This machine emits a humming noice that is so annoying. I read about it before buying it and assumed that the reviewer was over reacting. He wasn't. Sure it prints and faxes fine, but shouldn't it? What it shouldn't do is emmit this horribly annoying noise. Don't fool yourself and think that it won't bother you. IT WILL
Customer Review: Nice printer, horrible software
HP software has more in common with a virus than an application. Once installed, some functions are permanent and cannot be removed unless manually taken out of the registry. My 3055 disk installed Toolbox which years later I STILL haven't figured out how to remove. The scanning app refuses to work correctly and documents come out too light. There are literally hundreds of people on the net reporting the exact same problem over the last 3 years this product has been out with NO SOLUTIONS POSTED by HP. They simply ignore the bug and move on. I'm disgusted with HP and will never buy another HP product for this reason alone. At the point of throwing the whole thing in the trash and getting a Lexmark or Brother instead. NEVER AGAIN!!!!

Customer Review: Love it, love it, LOVE IT!
I went to HP website to research the latest updates and information for the J5780. After I signed up with HP, it mentioned : RECENT DRIVERS - NEW! for the J5780 Printer. In fact there are SEVERAL updates, drivers and files for this printer. Some files date back to 2007, several in 2008, and there a few now for 2009! So if you are having problems with this printer, check out the HP web site. With that said after reading the several unhappy reviews for this printer, I was very leery about buying this model but took a chance on it any way. Of all the different printer makes I've had over the last 15 years, HP printers have always come through for me. I still own three HP printers that work quite well. Some purchased dating back to 1995. Prior to purchasing the J5780, I've used my very dependable HP Deskjet 840c on a daily basis for everything. I bought the 840c new over 9+ years ago and it still works and going strong. I just needed a newer model that would clear up my desk of a copier, scanner, a fax machine etc. and one that would print better photo's than my HP 840c. The J5780 has not only saved me desk space, but has also worked very nicely for me (so far). I love this model and so glad I took the chance on this printer and hope it continues to work as dependable as my HP 840c has. It's quiet, very nice looking, easy to set up and use. I also really like all the software that came with it as well as the fast updates that HP had me download for it. (I run on Windows XP professional) Special notes: After you set up the printer, Align printer cartridge, set the language, date and time etc. you then install the software BEFORE you hook it up to USB. After this step, you then reconnect the printer to the USB. As for the ink, in the 286 page manual, chapter 12, page 126, it mentions to keep the cartridges in 60 to 78F room temps (not going to be an easy task in the summer and I live in Portland OR!). Another part that caught my eye in the manual was : Do NOT open the print cartridge door unless necessary. This exposes the cartridges to air, which REDUCES the life of the printer cartridge. I do find it strange that this printer is NOT supplied with a USB cable (needs a Type A to Type B USB cable) Fortunately, I had ordered a few from Geeks.com web site. Geeks also sells great items on Amazon as well and is how I discovered them. Anyway, for me this is a fantastic printer and hope to have it around for years to come as I have with my other HP printers.
Customer Review: Very Noisy!
I've had this printer a little over a year now, while it's not terrible, there are a few annoyances I wanted to point out for future buyers. 1) This printer is extremely noisy, especially while scanning. Both in using the document feeder and the flatbed scanner. 2) It shakes a lot while printing. It seems like HP sped up the movement of the printer head in order to speed up the printing process. Consequently the printer shakes quite a bit while printing. I have it sitting next to my computer monitor and it shakes the whole desk. 3) The result is that the printed document is a little smeared. I haven't figured out a way to slow down the printer to try to get better quality. The main reason it is tolerable is that I don't print very often. I mostly use the scanner. If/when I get fed up with this one, I'm going to get a Cannon Laser All-In-One.

HP Deskjet F335 All-in-One - Multifunction ( printer / copier / scanner ) - color - ink-jet - copying (up to): 17 ppm (mono) / 11 ppm (color) - printing (up to): 17 ppm (mono) / 11 ppm (color) - 100 sheets - USB

Print and copy with speeds up to 20 ppm black and 14 ppm color, plus preserve photos and documents with quality scanning and easily remove red eye from photos with HP Photosmart Real Life technologies.
Customer Review: Unreliable printer
I have been struggling with this all-in-one for three weeks now. First, I wanted to makes some scans, but then I received an error that the ink cartridge was not recognized anymore. The machine won't scan if you don't have ink in both cartridges! I still had ink left in both cartridges, so I was sad to replace them, but if it fixes the problem then it's worth it right? So I replaced both the ink cartridges, and the machine will finally make a scan. But now the the magenta won't print! It's a new color cartridge too! I've performed 5 cleaning cycles and wiped off the cartridge with rubbing alcohol and the printer still prints only blue and yellow... which makes for some very ugly pictures. This printer and scanner has failed me when I needed it most.
Customer Review: Excellent 3 in 1 Printer for a low price.
The HP DeskJet F335 3 in 1 Printer, Scanner and Copier does everything well. The unit makes a lot of funny, clunky noises before and during printing but so what...it does the job. Black and white and color printing are equally satisfactory. I've had it over a year without any problems whatsoever. For less then 50 bucks it's great. It would be perfect for a college student....cheap and reliable. HP or off-brand print cartridges are available everywhere.

Customer Review: Avery Labels slip
Avery labels are impossible to print. The printer wheels cannot get a good grip on the slippery paper. I've tried cleaning the wheels (although access is difficult). In all other ways I'm pleased with this printer. But since printing labels is an important part of my business, this printer is useless to me. This problem might totally be the fault of Avery. All I know is that the two products are incompatible with each other.
Customer Review: Quite trusty, when doing its proper job! 4.3 stars.
Pros: Black Nice design Prints relatively fast Can print multiple copies at a time Scanner Copier PhotoSmart Essential (?) HP Cheap Cons: Slightly bulky HP Malfunctions (blinking lights, paper gets stuck half-way through printing process) (Insert other printing problem(s) here) Cheap Overall, I must say I do recommend this HP Deskjet to anyone in need of a printer. It's pretty reliable most of the time (90% of the time it prints and copies things, without fail. I've tried scanning 2-3 times, with no luck. So I can't comment too much on that!). There are better printers out there for sure. But there are many more printers that don't perform this well. Recommended. 4.3 stars.

Customer Review: Fast, but autofeed isn't up to it
I was previously using the HP7650 and had a positive experience. I am a CPA and was looking for a faster solution to scanning workpapers. The N7710 appeared to be a solution. However, I should have done my homework. The HP drivers are not compatible with Windows Home Server software so I couldn't use my server as a scan server. Additionally, the autofeed is very unreliable and inconsistent.

Horrible Scanner

Just bought this today and I am again right away.
The installation software on the CD did not work, say that there is a file named hpzrein01 failed. After I managed to 168Mb software from HP website, the problem there. I tried two different laptops (Windows XP) and the problem was the same. In the end I managed to only the drivers without the full software.
The scans are horribly done. I wanted to use it to take pictures, but it keeps on scanning of the lid with the receipt for the negatives. This means that I have to harvest image to view the actual size photo. In addition, the scan was super slow, I can not believe that this product actually came from the market.
I'm sorry, but who at HP that the green light for this product should come up for another job. He would HP (and the world) a favor.

HP Scan Jet g3110

I have a large supply of negatives and wanted to quickly and easily. This is not the product! It takes more to scan and this is just after starting and restarting the program. Do not walk, but from the road on this item!

Customer Review: Awesome printer for business at home

I am a lawyer and I use this printer only for about 2000 pages per month. It is an amazing workhorse. It never jams, faxes, such as a children's play and makes decent copies. Like all sheetfed copiers, but they can be lines on the copies, if you're not fussy, what in them. And white tape stuck to appear on the reader and the lines on subsequent copies, so I use a flatbed scanner / copier for small objects and paper with "stuff" to. I would buy this printer again in a heartbeat and recommended it to friends with similar raves about this machine.

HP N6010 Scanner

HP N6010 Scanjet Document Sheet-feed Scanner

Great for small stacks

Although this scanner is fast you can not always place a stack of paper in the feeder and press scan. It starts pulling through 2-4 of the pages at a time. This makes it very diff with the large stacks I am always scanning. I have to feed them one by one. And forget it if someone or something comes in and distracts me because now I have to start all over. I have also found that with large stacks I have to break them up into two files. If I scan to many pages (one by one) into one PDF file the scanner always jams around the same area of the stack. If you are only scanning a few pages for each file I would fully recommend this scanner it is quick. But if you are scanning large stacks of papers or what a scanner that you can count on to only take one page of a stack at a time and not need to be constantly watched while scanning I suggest you continue shopping

Great basic document performance

I bought one for my office and found it easy to install, great choice of one-sided or two-sided scans and the copy function works great too. About one of 100 pages may feed double due to an old staple mark etc., but I use it all day, every day for basic document scanning of 8 1/2 x 11 pages and it has been trouble free. I have since bought two more for other employees and have added one for my home office use. I see other ratings where document feeding has been a problem - it has not been for our company at all. This is a good mid-level vanilla document PDF scanning device. It is not for fancy/odd shaped pages or for damaged documents. It works very well for this basic business use.

Not so good with Vista

I had high hopes for this. Good build quality. Seemed like all I'd need for fun and for my home office.

The thing never played all that well with Vista. It would often disappear from our network, which made it hard to print from our other computers.

The photo tray was crap. I had to give it english every time to get it to work correctly. The last time, unfortunately, I gave it too much and smashed the glass in the scanner.

The photo printed, finally, but now I'm shopping for a new printer.

If you're impatient like me, and you expect a fairly expensive printer to work well out of the box, skip this one.

I will say, however, that contrary to others' experiences, the scanner was the one thing that worked consistently well for me. That software was easy to use, and I got a lot of compliments on the scans I made with it.

If only the rest of the functions had been as good!

Great Printer at cheap price

bought this printer a few weeks ago and it works great.set up was a little long but worth it.Works fine on my windows vista,i have it set up to use the network.i can still use the scanner while im on wifi, took me a little while to learn how to do this.the printer is a little loud but hey every single piece of technology is not perfect.it gets the job done.would recommend this printer.

Beware of HP Printers - No Support for Main Stream OSes

Purchased laserjet 3055 printer December 2007. Box said it was Vista ready. Purchased a new Dell laptop with Vista Home Premium 64 bit one year later. HP does not provide software compatible with Vista 64 bit to scan and fax. HP misleads customers in their advertising and they don't support their products. Considering class action lawsuit because there are many customers who have been defrauded.

Professional Laser BW printer for home office

Having used this printer for 2.5 years now, I know the good and bad qualities of this product. Starting with the ADR, it usually does fine feeding 2-3 pages of paper though rarely with more paper it would get jammed. Release of jammed paper on the document feeder is simple and easy so you do not have to fret. The AIO comes with a rj-45 network port that you can attach to your home router or company switch which is a definite plus especially when you have a network. Also this printer can scan using your pc or mac using the software that comes with the printer, but the printer is unable to do it with the printer itself. That means you have to set the documents up in the printer, then run back to your computer wherever that is, and then initiate from there. what's good and bad about this is that you can have multiple computers use the scanner function, but you have to walk back and forth to the printer. The STOCK toner cartridge itself is really efficient lasting our home office for a year. Printing quality is exceptionally good for a B&W printer. It's been pretty consistent, and fast in rolling out pages which is a definite plus.

Save space with a landscape orientation. Scan legal-size documents in simplex mode using the automatic document feeder.

Customer Review: not worth the extra money for the network interface

The scanner is not worth the extra money for the network interface. If the network interface was built into the scanner that would be great. But as it is you must access the scanner and then access the network device to get the document to go where you want.

The auto document feeder gets jammed easily.

I ended up getting the HP N8460 which is MUCH bigger but worth it for the auto document feeder.

Customer Review: Don't be scared by the "two box" design

Works very well. I was initially scared by the fact that it is an HP scanner plus a third party (Axis) network server box but read good things about the Axis box when used with other scanners.

While it might have been more aesthetically pleasing if the network interface was integrated it works flawlessly as it is.

Scanning to e-mail can be done by dropping the document in the feeder, pressing two buttons and then walking away.

The web interface is basic but very functional. You can connect a keyboard directly but unless you scan to different e-mail addresses all the time, you will not need it.

I was also afraid that double-sided scanning from the feeder would require manual intervention but it doesn't.

I have no regrets on this choice. Works great in a small office environment. That said, if you're going to regularly scan document of 100's of pages, especially double-sided, you may want to look at faster (more expensive) solutions also.

Customer Review: Do not buy

This is a waste of money. The software does not work and is not fit for purpose. If you have more than one user on xp it will insist on installing multiple copies of printers, each time corrupting you initial installation requiring the lengthy install and uninstall. The only solution hp could offer was to disable device discovery, which now stops the printer printing half the documents, requiring a reboot each time. Buy something else.

Customer Review: Big Scanner Problems

Having checked all over the web, I've come to the conclusion that I'm not the only one with problems with the scanner. Everything else works but the scanner. It worked a few weeks ago but now just flashes me a message that my USB is not connected... but it is. No one seems to have a fix for it... so now I can't scan. I call HP and they keep giving me the run around telling me it's something on my computer...It's not!

I wouldn't buy this if you plan on using the scanner. The printer and copy feature work good.... (so how can the USB not be connected.)

Customer Review: Terrible product - avoid at all costs

This is a terrible product that you should avoid like the plague. After 20+ hours on the phone with tech support we had them send out a replacement, which has exactly the same problems, and I think the problem is their terrible software. Its software locks up the host machine at 100% processor use, the scanning is very poor quality when it works, which is seldom, and the printing locks up with random "49 error". It does send and receive faxes ok. I have an office full of HP equipment, and we had ok results with the earlier LJ3330 and LJ3380 models, but this is trash.

Customer Review: I wish I could give zero stars

It is now August of 2008 and I still can't scan with this device which is not compatible with Windows Vista and there is no evidence that it will ever work. So it's a great printer but if you really wanted what you paid for (a printer, fax and scanner) and if you have Windows Vista, save your money.

Customer Review: INK USAGE IS INSANE!

I've been using this printer for about 3 months and have gone through 3 ink cartridges. I don't print more than maybe 50-75 pages a month. At around $13 (at the cheapest) a cartridge this is insane. If I hadn't gotten the printer as a gift this would be a terrible investment. I could print for years (2500 pages) on a laser cartridge for $50. For the price, buy a laser printer and never look back! I'm warning you don't make the same mistake I did.

Customer Review: Great MFP with one major flaw

I've owned this printer for about a year and a half. It was a great performer for light to average home use but has one major flaw. The available ink cartridges only have 5ml of ink which barely last a month even with light use.

After going through my last two ink cartridges this fall, I decided it was a better investment to buy a new MFP. I paid $79 for a new Canon MP470 which included 16ml ink cartridges (and has high capacity cartridges available when it is time for a refill). It would have cost me almost $50 for two 5ml black and one 5ml color cartridge for the HP. For $30 more, I got the equivalent of 1 extra black cartridge, 2 extra color cartridges and a free printer to go with it.

I understand HPs motivation but 5ml cartridges is just an insult. If I was aware of this when I was buying the printer, I would not have done it. BEWARE!

Customer Review: Decent Enough. . .

I've been using this device for about 12 months now and I'm happy enough with it. Perhaps in the future, I might try this product which seems to get stellar reviews:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000YA1XVG/ref=nosim/gizmodo-20

Yes, it does seem to jam a lot, and when it does, it does seem to be a pain to get it out, depending on where it is. But for the hundreds of documents I scan in, mainly office papers, it does the work well enough.
It creates searchable PDFs, and I simply scan in a document through the ADF, and it creates a file, subbed by the month, and I'm able to later search the documents by the month.
I also use the flat bed for documents that are strangely shaped, or look as though they won't fit the feeder, but those are rare for me.
Overall, I'm happy with it, but I do wish I got the item I linked to above instead, because I don't think I would've expected as much for only $260. For the price of about $460 that I paid for this. . . I think we all expected less hassle with jams. . .

Customer Review: Does not work on Vista!

If you are running vista, save your money! Do not buy this scanner!!! Tech support will get it to print to their crappy software, but your computer will not recognize the driver. You will not be able to use it with any purchased software.

Customer Review: Great printer

I chose this printer last year and have not regretted it. It's very very user friendly, has great printing quality and some nice features to show off about. HP ink is always a bit expensive but the customer service cannot be beat so if anything goes wrong, you are in good hands. This printer is most suited to the casual user because in certain modes it can suck a lot of that expensive ink. All in all, a pretty good buy especially if you can get it for less than $100.00.

Customer Review: HP F4180 ALL IN ONE

I liked this product when I first got it (about 6 months ago). 2 months after I got it we were making copies and the scanner got stuck all the way to the right. It finally went back to moving and now its happened again. I can't scan anything or make copies. That was the whole reason I had purchased this printer.

Customer Review: A good little printer, for the price

We bought this printer because we wanted an HP printer to go with our HP computer. Also, we wanted a printer that could print on DVD-R's and CD-R's. The printer functions well. The only issue I have with it is that it does not print photographs to the same quality as my Dad's more expensive Epson all-in-one. I'm sure the price difference has a lot to do with that. For the price, this is an excellent computer. We've had ours for over a year and have never had any issues with it.

Customer Review: Can't go wrong with this one

I bought this printer to replace my old printer and scanner, deciding to just combine the two. Installation was fairly painless. The software guided you through the process well, but I ultimately uninstalled the standard software and installed the basic drivers to save on resources (the full drivers add a lot of bloatware). Everything works exactly is it should. The cd/dvd printing tray is a nice touch, much better results than using a lightscribe disc. My only complaint with it is that you need to use the customized version of Roxio express labeler (it will not work with the version for the full Roxio suite). The color prints are very vibrant and detailed for an inkjet, and text comes out very nicely also. Where this printer shines though is when the computer's off. The copier functions are very nice: black prints and color are set to their own separate buttons, resizing and cropping is fairly straightforward, and the included card ready plus the LCD screen make printing directly from a camera's memory card extremely easy, almost making a computer unneccesary.

Pros:

Simple installation

CD/DVD printing tray

Straightforward interface

LCD screen

Memory card reader

Great ink

Vibrant prints & clear text

Cons:

Bloated full drivers

CD/DVD will only work with one program

As you can see, there isn't really any problems with this unit, the two problems I have are minor. If they don't bother you, than this is a great all-in-one for the price. I wholeheartedly recommend it.
